The Native House of Saint Charbel in Baakafra serves as a significant historical and spiritual site, dedicated to the venerable Saint Charbel Makhlouf. Born on May 8, 1828, in Baakafra, North Lebanon, Youssef Antoun Makhlouf was the son of Maronite parents, Antoun Zaarour Makhlouf and Brigitta Chidiac. His family comprised two brothers, John and Beshara, and two sisters, Kawn and Wardeh.
From an early age, Youssef was raised within a devout Christian environment that fostered a profound love for prayer. His upbringing inclined him toward monastic and hermitic life, inspired by his two paternal uncles who resided as hermits in the solitude of the Saint Anthony Hermitage at Kozhayah. These spiritual influences guided him toward the virtues of asceticism and piety, which he would later embody as part of his religious vocation.
